History
Carrboro was originally named West End because of its location west of Chapel Hill, but was later renamed Carrboro after North Carolina industrialist, Julian Shakespeare Carr. Carrboro was settled in 1882 around the State University Railroad in Glenn, North Carolina. The local merchants argued that the railroad station should be placed at least two miles outside of town to prevent students from leaving town on the weekends and therefore spending money elsewhere.
Settlement increased in the area after Thomas F. Lloyd of Chapel Hill constructed a steam-powered grist mill near the depot, which later became Alberta Cotton Mill. In addition to the name of West End, Carrboro was also temporarily called Lloydville, Venable, and then finally its current name shortly after its incorporation in 1911.
